AFFTA Show

I had the privilege of attending the Fly fishing trade show at the Denver convention center this week. Amazing to see all the new technology that's going into today's rods, reels and other gear.

It's also amazing to me how much less things cost at wholesale. I understand that dealer networks are an effective way to distribute a product and one of the only ways to get a product widespread awareness and placement, but the money we could save if fishing companies all sold their products direct astounds me.

Fishing with the boys

I had the priviledge of taking a group of young men from Alabama fishing in Rocky Mountain National Park this weekend. I got to spend 3 days and 3 nights with these guys and had an amazing time. Every one on the trip (9 or so total) managed to catch their first trout, and most of them landed quite a few.

I added some pics from this trip. Check em out.

Warming Up

Finally some warm weather has come to Colorado! Been seeing some nice pictures, congrats to those of you who've been able to make it out and catch some fish. Keep it up. I'm heading out to California for my little brother's college graduation and will get some fishing in on the upper sacramento, and McCloud rivers. Hopefully I'll come back with some pictures!

The Skunk

So i've been out on a few local streams (Clear Creek, South Platte) early this season and it's been a rough start to the season. I generally pride myself in being a pretty savvy moving-water fisherman, but so far this year i've been skunked on every stream i've visited.

Ashamed as I am, i have to peg some of it on the early season. I've been itching to get on a river so bad I've hit up streams that are 75% iced over still, trying to fish the pockets of open water i can get to. Probably setting myself up for failure. In any case, it's been a slow start. I've caught a few bass and bluegill in local ponds, and fun as that is, i really live to be on the rivers. New waders, new vest, and new flyrod all waiting to get a good breaking-in.

Cabin fever kicking in

And tomorrow it's supposed to snow more here in CO... sigh...

If only i had it in me to take up ice fishing. Unfortunately, i love rivers, though if any of there area lakes were un-frozen, i'd gladly hit them up to get my fix.

I don't tie flies in the winter, I don't ice fish, i don't hunt. That means a long, tortuous winter waiting for the thaw. Then comes the spring runoff, where only a select few rivers and tailwaters are fishable when my itch to get out is at it's worst.

From the lack of winter-photos on the site, i gather most of you don't do a whole lot of fishing in the winter either.

What do you do to keep occupied during the winter months?
